Raw and Other Short Plays
by Victoria Z. Daly
A collection of one-act dark comedies, dramedies and absurdities by award-winning playwright Victoria Z. Daly. Includes the titles RAW, HIGH WATER LINE, FAR NORTH, CIRCLING THE GLOBE, BOTTOM OF THE ORDER, WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT (#AFTER THE BANS,) and FINAL REST. By turns intimate, unsettling, politically pointed, and hilarious, these plays for 1-3 actors feature humans desperate to connect with each other. Grieving, clueless, wounded and wounding, the characters often find themselves ensnared in over-the-top physical situations. See why these plays, vows one producer, make the audience “squirm, gasp and laugh all in the same breath.”

Victoria Z. Daly is a master at the short play form, and this collection shows her at her best. There is not one script here that isn’t stunning in its depth, characterizations, and multi-layered storytelling. Every play is a wonderful work that lives as vividly on the page as on the stage. Recommended most highly.
Daly is a courageous and amazingly rangy writer, In these plays she takes on a multitude of difficult themes, ranging from miscarriage to abuse to the end of days-climate change a la Beckett and somehow manages to make us fear, tremble, identify and yes, laugh. Her characters are fully fleshed and all-too-humanly flawed and we fully engage with them, whether we love or hate them. Any actors reading this – you’ll want to inhabit these characters. Directors – this is a feast of theatrical possibilities! Take up the gauntlet Daly throws down – you won’t regret it!
Victoria Z. Daly is a master of captivating our sense of truth through a fine line of the human experience. Her plays unfold with a journey of unexpected dynamics which makes each story exciting and unique. Whether reading or seeing her work, prepare to be moved. Highly recommend!
Aptly named is Victoria Z. Daly’s “RAW & Other Short Plays” Each gem in this collection is a stripped-down, bare to the bone, red meat, kind of raw. As precise as Haiku, our human-ness and the human condition are flayed and exposed to us with surgical precision. Ms Daly captures us & then leaves us open, moved, often entertained, frequently disturbed but always, always, thinking. In short this is really good stuff & is a gift to actor’s who are looking for something to sink their teeth into.

Opening “Raw”, Victoria Daly’s new collection, is like opening a jewel box. Therein lie a series of precious short plays – imaginatively conceived, beautifully crafted, perceptive and insightful on the inner workings of family relationships. Written with wisdom and humor, these plays offer wonderful new roles and exciting opportunities for innovative directors.d
Award winning Victoria Z. Daly’s brilliant short plays certainly justify her acclaim. They are immediately captivating – exploring such a wide range of human experience and behavior – with extraordinary authenticity – exquisite insight, compassion and pathos – and deliciously wicked humor. This book is a joy and a gem – for actors and directors alike. And for theaters looking for thrilling audience productions. Delighted to give her plays my absolute highest recommendation!
RAW and Other Short Plays
These are sly and subtle plays. While concise, they are full of humor and guarded emotions that eventually erupt to the surface. We think the play will go in one direction, but it goes skillfully to another into unexpected territory of deep feeling and unresolved passions. The stories and characters get under our skin and into our consciousness when the characters, such as the daughter in CIRCLING THE GLOBE yearns to make connections to her family. Regardless of background, any actor would have a field day portraying these rich characters in these provocative plays.
