Purple Heart City

by Taylor Gruenloh

Nobody has seen Daniel in eighteen months. When he suddenly returns home, hoping to pick life up where he left it, he finds a family that is slow to forgive him. He also finds a community that is tired and haunted by a past of having nuclear waste illegally dumped in its creeks and backyards.

When the world around you is designed to keep you tired and sick, how do you find the energy to fight?

Gut-wrenching play about the power of community.

Purple Heart City by Taylor Gruenloh is a punch in the gut tale of love, loss, and community. Unlike other plays, there is no magical moment of unrealistic reunion in the broken relationships of Purple Heart City, but rather a story about the real life slow struggle in forgiveness and redemption. Set against the looming catastrophe of the human cost of environmental destruction and pollution, Purple Heart City shows us the cost of destroying ourselves, our relationships, and our community and the painful struggle to not just return and survive, but to return and love.
