The year is 1976, and the stage is set at the legendary IMPROV comedy club in New York City. The audience is about to witness one of Freddie Prinze’s final performances, just months before his tragic death. This is the story of Freddie Prinze Sr., the young comedic icon who skyrocketed to fame in the 1970s on the hit TV show Chico & the Man. Born to immigrant parents, he was half Hungarian and half Puerto Rican—a “Hungarican,” as he called himself—who overcame poverty and racism to achieve Hollywood stardom. His best comedy routines are seamlessly intertwined with raw, introspective monologues, offering a poignant glimpse into his battles with fame, identity, and inner demons. As he reminisces, confesses, and bares his soul, the play paints a riveting portrait of a young man whose love for comedy was both his salvation and his greatest passion, capturing the essence of his brilliance and vulnerability.

About the Playwright
Jose Sonera – is an actor/writer born and raised in the hell’s kitchen area of New York City. He is a theatre alumnus from LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts, Lehman College (Theatre BA) and Brooklyn College (Acting MFA). He has appeared on NBC’s Law & Order and has toured with the National Theatre of the Performing Arts in Don Quixote de la Mancha and Dandelion’s Much Ado About Nothing. PRINZE is a solo play written by Jose based on the life of late comedian Freddie Prinze Sr. It has been his lifelong goal to finally tell the story of this forgotten comedic legend responsible for paving the way for so many Latinos in Hollywood. The play had a successful run at the Sheen Center (NYC) and won Best Comedy and the Critics Award as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival. The show received rave reviews and the support of Freddie’s biggest fan – actor/comedian George Lopez.
