OPHELIA CARRIES A CROWN OF BLOOD

by Andrea Miranda

During a university theater class, Emma becomes entangled in a complex dynamic with her professor, Bernarda. As rehearsals intensify, art and reality blur, forcing Emma to confront shifting emotions and unspoken desires. The classroom transforms into a battleground of power, vulnerability, and artistic risk, where boundaries are tested, and identities reshaped. Through poetic language and evocative imagery, Ophelia Carries a Crown of Blood explores the ambiguity of student-teacher relationships, the cost of artistic devotion, and the haunting echoes of unfulfilled longing.

About the Playwright

Andrea Miranda is a theater director, playwright, and actress, and a graduate of the School of Theatrical Arts at the University of Costa Rica. Her work focuses on raising awareness of social marginalization, addressing themes such as poverty, economic inequality, sexual diversity, women’s rights, and climate change.

She is the founder of Manifiesto Escénico Producciones and the published author of Andrea Miranda: 3 Plays. Currently based in Houston, Texas, Andrea is actively involved in the local theater community while continuing to collaborate on artistic projects in her home country.

Her artistic practice is deeply influenced by creators and thinkers such as Antonin Artaud, Hans-Thies Lehmann, Federico García Lorca, and Fernando Arrabal. As a playwright and director, she focuses on poetic imagery and visual metaphor as core elements of her storytelling, seeking to move beyond language and reach the audience through symbolism, physicality, and emotion.

Through Manifiesto Escénico, her mission is to create theatrical experiences that challenge traditional conventions. Her work explores physical theater, dance, and music as essential modes of expression, while honoring the power of words and dialogue. She believes theater must be a catalyst for transformation and revelation—capable of forging profound emotional connections with audiences. This vision is also reflected in her texts, where poetic imagery and visual metaphor serve as powerful tools to awaken emotional and intellectual responses.

Committed to tackling urgent political and social issues, Andrea amplifies marginalized voices and interrogates systems of power through her art. Her productions invite audiences to reflect on their own experiences and roles in society, encouraging personal interpretation and meaningful dialogue beyond the stage.
