FleshEatingTiger chronicles a tumultuous affair between a married woman and an alcoholic man, both performing artists. As they struggle to stage a play, their personal lives intertwine with the action of the play. The man struggles to maintain his sobriety while the woman becomes increasingly addicted to his affection. The action unravels in a whirlwind of fragmented scenes portrayed with varying degrees of realism, absurdism and symbolism. Intended to be every bit as fun and heartbreaking as a toxic relationship.
Built for any playing space from an empty studio to site specific to an elaborate set designed for a theater, cavernous or intimate.

An emotionally precise, fun journey through dysfunction and passion.
FleshEating Tiger is a powerful two-character verbal dance between a couple struggling with love, passion, creativity, and alcoholism. Always surprising, this torrid piece is written with acerbic wit and intelligent dialogue, giving the rich characterizations depth and substance and leaving us with questions about ourselves.
This play leveled me when I first saw it. A rich treat for any actor to wrestle with, and a tense, relentless adventure in any theater space. Tofte’s words rip off the page and through your heart as the action tumbles with unforgiving bareness through poetry, realism, the meta, and the absurd.
I was lucky enough to see two versions of this play produced and read the script. It has two amazing roles for actors with all the emotional range an actor craves. It was also surprisingly funny (but also dark)…both audiences I saw it with laughed a lot. There’s also terrific contained scenes that would be great for actor scene study or for directing classes.
Produced this with Australians at the Valdez Theatre Conference. It’s a tough, clever ride, filled with striking imagery and palpable ominous quality. Good theatre, with challenging/great dialogue.
When I read this play my imagination was sparked as a producer and director I was able to play with staging and production ideas. The script was relatable, flexible and engaging. My entire creative team loved working on this play – I ended up producing it twice, the first time in 2014 at my theatre in Richmond Australia – ‘The Owl and Cat Theatre’ and then I also directed the second time around as well as producing, and we were privileged to present it at the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez Alaska.
This is a script that woke me up and shook me up. Addiction is often a topic fraught with deep trauma and hard to work with, not in this case though, Amy Tofte’s genius approach to the subject matter had my audiences both laughing and crying.
Flesh Eating Tiger was a career-defining script for me and one of my favourites to date, it was an honour and privilege to bring these words to life and I would do it again glady.
