INCIDENT AT WILLOW CREEK
by Benjamin V. Marshall
Verité, an African American Professor is at a crossroads. She’s complacent about her position and smug about her neutral stance regarding guns. Yet, she obsesses over a recent gun incident that resulted in the killing of an innocent black man. She closely follows the story on TV and radio and is torn between the need to defend oneself and the need to comply with law enforcement. At the same time, her student Maxwell perplexes her with his own fixation on guns. He even offers to teach her how to shoot. With her own college increasing preparation for security risks and sudden attacks, and ultimately actual danger, Verité must confront her cynical attitude, her physical safety, and her own beliefs.

About the Playwright
Born in Newark, NJ to racially mixed parents, Benjamin Vaughan Marshall earned degrees in English and Theatre from Kean University before studying playwriting at Hunter University then completing anMFA in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Upon returning to the USA, he worked briefly as a journalist, published poetry, and began writing plays that have been produced around the country. He writes about people of diverse backgrounds who, despite obstacles, must strive for common goals. His accolades include five playwriting fellowships from the NJ State Council on the Arts, as well as fellowships from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, VCCA, NEH, and the Robert Chesley/ Victor Bumbalo Foundation. He is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild, the New Play Exchange, and the 9th Floor, a collective of writers and actors. He is professor of English, creative writing and African American Literature at Middlesex County College, NJ and teaches playwriting at Wagner College, Staten Island.
