Captain Cobalt vs The Sinister Scientist

A vaudeville-style comedy straight out of Saturday morning cartoons. This play has 18 characters and is intended to be performed by only 2 women. Captain Cobalt is an up-and-coming superhero trying to balance her heroic deeds with her secret identity, Cyanna Conda, the lowly pet store clerk. She battles everything from giant squid monsters to cheese-themed supervillains, encountering any number of bystanders (and a love interest) along the way. The final showdown, however, is with Captain Cobalt’s nemesis, the nefarious Dr. Killington, the mad scientist who insists that SHE is the hero of the story. Captain Cobalt et. al. encourage lots of audience interaction (cheering and booing especially) along the way. The set can be as stripped-down or elaborate as the production pleases, but the most important part…all the props are bananas. (Yes, actual literal bananas. The kind that pop when you throw them.)

About the Playwright
Sawyer Quinn Brown graduated MCLA with a B.A. in Theatre and a minor in Creative Writing in 2008. In 2015 a short script they co-wrote won Best New Work in the Alternatives Play Festival, and in 2019 their first full-length script, ‘Captain Cobalt vs. the Sinister Scientist’, was performed in NYC and in Boston. ‘Captain Cobalt’ has subsequently been published on Scripts for Stage. Their play ‘Space Team Go!’ was recently published by Next Stage Press. They live in Chicago, IL with their two cats.

This play is so clever and full of comedy reminiscent of Vaudeville. Its charm is in its DIY aesthetic, so it’s perfect for small and low-budget companies. And it finishes with a very relevant political message. It would make a great social science conversation starter for late elementary, middle school, and high school students. It’s also great fun for adult or family settings. The fact that it travels so well complements its versatility!
When the performance note says all props will be replaced by bananas, you know you’re in for a good time. This play is hilarious. Two women frantically playing 18 roles, spoofing every super hero convention and then making fun of itself for doing so, the stage hands doing cameos, the audience encouraged to participate with boos and cheers, and a terrific twist at the end, all of it streaming from the delightfully quirky comedic mind of Sawyer Quinn Brown. What more could you ask to insure a rollicking evening filled with groans and belly laughs?
